U pravnoj teoriji postoji niz definicija pojma radnog odnosa, a koje su se mijenjale sukladno odnosima rada koji su označavani radnim odnosima. Osim toga i poimanje radnog odnosa neposredno je ovisilo i od vladajuće društvene i znanstvene spoznaje koja je bila dominantna u konkretnom povijesnom razdoblju.
