The process of European integration began in 1951. With the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community and continued with the establishment of the European Economic Community in 1958. At the initiative of the Benelux countries together with Italy, France and Germany. These countries have become aware of the need to establish this type of Community, which will, first of all, ensure peace in Europe, but also lead to significant economic development of the member states by implementing common policies. Over the years and during seven rounds of enlargement, European Union today has a total of 27 member states that had to pass throught a very difficult path and harmonize their legislation and economy with other member countries before joining the European Union. The haviest blow to the European integration process occurred in 2016. when the citizens of the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union. This case is better known as Brexit. Despite that, the European Union has not given up on a policy based on the promotion of democracy and equality for all member states. In addition, states that are ready to follow the same policies are enabled to submit application for membership, and depending on the decision of the European Commission, to open accession negotiations. Currently, eight European countries have the status of candidate countries, while two countries have the status of potential candidates. The future of European integration will mostly include Balkan and Eastern Europe countries, which represents, probably, the biggest challenge in the history, due to numerous problems associated with these countries.
