Abstract
Suvremene stope usvajanja WiFi (802.11) tehnologije su izazvale situaciju u kojoj ona postaje često nedovoljno ozbiljno shvaćen izvor potencijalnih izvora napada. Iako se laički krajnji korisnici osjećaju sigurno korištenjem osnovnih standarda enkripcije (WEP, WPA, pa sad i WPA2), prava istina jest da je iznimno jednostavno izvesti mnoštvo napada na tipičnu kućnu mrežu ili onu manje tvrtke ili organizacije. Ovaj rad obrađuje opasnosti MITM – a i drugih – napada, kao i jednostavne korake pomoću kojih se korisnik može zaštititi implementacijom WIDS sustava korištenjem pristupačnog hardvera i open source softvera. Pri kraju, rad će pokušati utvrditi praktičnost takvog pristupa kroz pokušaj uspostave takvog sustava s lako dostupnim hardverom i softverom. Zaključak će ovisiti o izvedivosti takvog sustava, naspram korištenja novih, jeftinih mikro računala i komponenti.

Contemporary rates of WiFi (802.11) adoption have turned the technology into an oft-underestimated source of potential security breaches. Even though the lay user base typically feels protected by employing basic encryption (first WEP, then WPA and currently WPA2), the truth is that it is trivially easy to perform a multitude of attacks on typical home and small business setups. This paper will cover the danger of a MITM attack – and others - as well as fairly straightforward steps one might take to prevent similar intrusions by implementing a basic WIDS setup with off-the-shelf hardware and open source software. The final part will try and assess the practicality of such an approach through an attempt to build one with easily available hardware and software. The conclusion will hinge on whether contemporary router hardware can compete with the newest low-cost and low-power computer alternative.
