Europol is European Union Agency for information exchange and its main task is to provide a sense of security to the citizens of the European Union by working with its 28 Member States, also third countries with which it has an agreement, as well as with international organizations. Europol, together with the competent authorities of the Member States, combats serious forms of crime, with the greatest focus on combating terrorism, cybercrime and human trafficking. The basic document of the establishment of Europol is the Convention of the Establishment of a European Police Office, based on which Europol commences with work on July 1, 1999. The center of work, The Hague in The Netherlands, is designated with the decision of the European Council, and is still located there to this day. The Convention ceases to have effect on April 6, 2009, with the entry into force of a Council Decision to extend the mandate to all forms of crime and terrorism. EU Parliament and Council on May 11, 2016 brought Regulation making Europol the European Union Agency for the Cooperation of Law Enforcement Agencies, which entered into force on May 1, 2017.
